Big Spring Planting Event

The much anticipated special Big Spring planting event is finally here! Come out and enjoy part of your Saturday morning in the beautiful Great Trinity Forest at Big Spring Preserve! Open to the public! Join other volunteers, citizens, students, master naturalists and city staff on Saturday March 11, 2017 from 9am till noon.

Activities: For early birds at 8am there will be a brief tour of Big Spring Preserve that will highlight flora, fauna, history and orientation of the land. Spanning thousands of years, the history of Big Spring is one of inspiration and wonder.

What to bring: Gloves, water for yourself and please wear long pants and sturdy shoes.

At 9am, planting will begin of 600 plants. 90 Milkweed plants are earmarked for planting at Big Spring. Milkweed are the host plants for monarch butterflies. A unique opportunity presents itself to help this imperiled insect with new habitat. The milkweed plants were grown from rootstock saved from being destroyed in 2014. Those plants carefully curated are now ready to be re-planted at Big Spring.

Sturdy bur oaks, post oaks and other trees will be planted as well. Some of the trees will likely grow to be many stories tall in coming decades. Come plant one or two! There will also be many native prairie grasses and understory plants that provide food and habitat for wildlife in the Great Trinity Forest.

The plantings are native Trinity River stock grown by Lewisville Aquatic Ecosystem Research Facility (LAERF). Members of their staff will be on hand to assist in plantings and mapping. More information available on LAERF here:
